The second planning committee meeting was held
in Normal on April 24. Reports from the various subcommittees
were given.
Chong Zheng, Rock River Section, has reserved a
27-inch TV, computer equipment, and microphone system for use
in the tent.
The committee discussed what to show in our exhibit
and decided on an environmental theme.
We decided to have a photo slide show of kids having
fun watching or participating in chemistry demos. Chong
volunteered to compile such photos submitted to him into a slide
show and burn CD’s for each of us with the resulting show.
Frank Salter (Mark Twain Section) offered to assist
with advice and resources for removing waste chemicals from the
demos. He will also donate a reasonable number of safety
glasses for audience members to borrow while watching or participating
in the demos.
Frank passed out a compilation of suggestions submitted
for possible demos to use. We agreed that he will select
a few appropriate demos and submit them to the rest of the committee
for consideration.
We decided it would be reasonable to try to set
up volunteers for three 4-hour shifts/day, such as 8:00AM-12:00PM,
12:00PM-4:00PM, and 4:00PM-8:00PM. We would like 4-6 volunteers
for each time slot. An on-line form to help people sign
up was also considered worth pursuing.
Marsha Phillips indicated that the Chem West people
will help with the show. She also suggested a number of
items that she would like to be able to put in a bag and hand
to each teacher. We would need donations of materials or
money to acquire these materials in sufficient quantities to
hand out.
We would also like to be able to burn 500 CD copies
of the ChemShorts for Kids program from the Chicago website to
hand out, but don’t know of an inexpensive, efficient way
to do this.
